The North Sarah project was a residential development located between Midtown and Central West End, not far from St. Louis University. Kelpe’s role was the installation of sewer and water main. The challenge of this project was the storm sewer connection to the Old Mill Creek sewer tunnel, located about 100′ below the surface. To accomplish this, Kelpe had to drill a 7′ diameter hole to a depth of 105′ and then bore a 3′ diameter horizontal tunnel for about 5′. Drilling was slow after encountering solid rock at about 20′ from the surface. Dewatering was a daily occurrence due to groundwater seepage through the bedrock. Despite the challenges, Kelpe completed the deep mahole and connection to the Mill Creek Sewer in 42 days.
